Relationship Driven Design

The Goal

Jackola has performed three renovations for Glacier Bank, part of our community since 1955. We are both headquartered in Kalispell, Montana. GBCI operates divisions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada. Each division is run independently by members of its community, which gives a small town bank experience with large bank strength and capacity, keeping decisions local. Working to address issues with growth and limited space, Jackola scanned existing facilities with Matterport technology. Taking all details into account, from more natural daylight in the building to upgrading the ventilation system. The interiors were remodeled. Glacier has received awards for stability and soundness over the years, and ranks among the top 10% in the nation for financial strength. We share their goal of practical, sustainable growth.

The Journey
1.

Sustainability: LEED, Green Globes and Well Building can be cost-prohibitive, but the client wanted to incorporate sustainability into their redesigns. Working with the design team, they were able to achieve LEED certification in Butte and identified a number of green design methods, such as use of durable material, electric vehicle charge stations, circadian and daylighting, local labor and local sourcing, LED, and energy recovery ventilation.

2.

Design: Great design is invisible. Our designers know if they have done their job well, no one will see the specific design elements they are enjoying, but they will be comfortable and the space will function well as it should. We were able to effectively use concept visuals to keep the team on the same page and encourage input from the client.

3.

Planning: Space planning is Who and Where and Why. Who needs proximity, who needs privacy, mechanical zoning and light dimming. We're thinking about the end result. We implement the best planning strategies we can to consider the impact of growth, technological change, and the needs of the community itself.

Applied Solutions
Relationship Driven Design

Our goal is serving the client and the community within and surrounding the projects we work on. Our goals blended successfully with the culture of Glacier Bank. We achieved their sustainability goal of LEED Certification for the Butte renovation through methods such as a new VRF system with energy recovery DOAS and hydronic backup heat. It was instrumental in teaching us the potential of a VRF system in cold weather applications and control requirements, approaching challenges and creating solutions when incorporating the VRF system into a bacnet control system. The VRF system now works with hydronic heat to provide heating and cooling in an area normally not well suited to VRF. We also increased ventilation and filtration above code requirements to inhibit the spread of airborne disease. Our engineers work with the contractor and the maintenance team of the client to ensure systems can be easily maintained and accessed. For Buffalo Commons, the bank facilities director was instructed on all the systems and their function. As he does not perform maintenance, Jackola arranged a tutorial with several other employees to adjust temperature and occupation times with training by the contractor to better understand the system user interface. The bank maintains a service contract with the contractor to change filters and provide yearly maintenance as well as address any issues. This allowed us the opportunity to design a sustainable system with more complexity as working with the director, we trust the basic knowledge and any issues will be identified and addressed. Sustainable methods, responsible management of public funds and an appealing and functional end result benefits client brand and public perception. We save cost where we can and gain efficiencies such as a change from a cooling tower to ground source heat pump and gas fired make up air to ERV. We use Matterport to limit site visits, and keep communication accurate between team members. This relationship driven group of projects focused on the client goals, such as controlling noise between work groups while maintaining natural light and encouraging interaction between work groups in the Operations Center. Interior design was key to all projects, and the Interiors team worked closely with client representatives.
